YEAR OF THE PIG
By Natasha, January 2019
People all over the world celebrate the Chinese New Year and 2019 is the Year of The Pig! At The Pigfather, our Mini Pigs will be celebrating the holidays in style, with lots of treats, cuddles and love, because, after all, it is their year!
Chinese New Year celebrations in 2019 begin on February 5th 2019 and are known as a Spring Festival. Every year, the Spring Festival starts on a different day according to the Lunar Calendar, which is still followed in China. It is the most important holiday for Chinese people across the continents, and is a time of prayer and family reunions and can last for 15-16 days.
For over 2,000 years Chinese have believed in the Zodiac signs and assigned 12 animals for each of the years. It is believed that this tradition stems from the worship the people had towards the animals. The 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac include:
Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
Each Zodiac sign is represented by a set of characteristics which astrologists use to predict how the year would turn out to be, to find compatible signs, and recommendations for other zodiac signs. It’s a whole science of Chinese Horoscope!
2019 is the Chinese Year of Pig, which is the last sign of the Zodiac system, after which the first sign, which is the Rat, begins again and the cycle continues for another 12 years. There are myths surrounding the reason why the Pig became the last of the signs. One of the myths suggest that a wolf destroyed the pigs’ house and the pig had to re-build it, making him late to the Jade Emperor’s party (? Similarity with the Three Little Pigs’ story?). Another reason given to why the pig took the 12th place on the Zodiac system was because the pig overslept and was late to arrive at the party!
The Pig symbolizes Wealth and Fortune in the Chinese Tradition.
